We frequently hear about various hybrid and electric vehicles, but they are not the same. The primary distinction is that an electric car uses only electric energy stored in a battery. In contrast, a hybrid vehicle uses a combination of electricity and conventional fuel.
What is a hybrid electric car?
An internal combustion engine is combined with one or more electric motors that use energy stored in batteries to power hybrid electric vehicles. Mild hybrids, also known as micro hybrids, use a mortar and an electric motor to power the car and allow the engine to shut off when the car stops (for example, at a traffic light or in stop-and-go traffic), improving fuel economy.
What is an electric car?
Electric cars, also known as “electric vehicles,” run on electricity rather than gasoline. They produce no pollution or greenhouse gas emissions and are generally quieter and smoother than other vehicles. Most electric vehicles have batteries that must be recharged from an external power source. Electric vehicles are more silent, emit no exhaust emissions, and have lower overall emissions. Some countries have enacted legislation to phase out the sale of fossil-fuel vehicles.
Is a hybrid car an electric car?
An electrochemical storage system (a battery) is the only onboard energy storage system in fully electric vehicles (also known as Battery Electric Vehicles, or BEVs) is an electrochemical storage system (a battery). One or more electric motors generate mechanical power, with energy recovered from braking. The batteries can be charged using the power grid. Hybrid vehicles include batteries as well as combustion engines that run on gasoline.
Different models of electric and hybrid cars
Hybrids are classified into two types:
- Chargeable
- Conventional
Chargeable hybrid vehicles, also known as Plug-in Electric Vehicles or PHEVs, have a grid-chargeable battery and a conventional gas engine with a fuel tank. Mechanical power is provided by the combustion engine and the electric motor, and energy is recovered through braking.
Conventional hybrid vehicles (so-called Full Hybrids) have a non-grid-chargeable battery and a traditional gas engine with a fuel tank. Mechanical power is provided by the combustion engine and the electric motor, and energy is recovered through braking.
The benefits of owning an electric vehicle are numerous. In Italy, these include everything from dedicated accessible parking spaces to access to restricted traffic zones and national and local incentives and subsidies such as road tax exemptions and lower insurance premiums.
Electric vehicles are classified into three types:
- Pure electric vehicles
- Plug-in hybrid vehicles
- Range-extended vehicles
An all-electric vehicle is propelled by an electric motor that draws energy from rechargeable batteries.
Electric vehicles are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. They can be charged at a charging station with a power adapter or plugging them into a standard power outlet. A mains plug is used to recharge the battery pack. Higher speeds and longer distances are achieved with battery power.
Range-extended electric vehicles have larger batteries that can be charged from an external source, allowing you to set your car at home while sleeping, at work during the day, or at a public charging station.
