A digital printing machine consists of a printing media head and printer, the printer controller and inkjet ink. It also includes an integrated digital ink controller that enables the user to control the characteristics of the print media. The most common application for a digital printing machine involves direct mail services and direct mail advertisements. Businesses that have a large volume of outgoing mail typically use this type of machine.
The term digital printing machine refers to any machine that prints on a coated surface. Coated surfaces could be paper, plastic, or glass. In most cases, a computer program is used to create the image. There are two types of digital production printers; digital printers and variable data printers. Digital printers and variable data printers are usually separated due to their different ways of capturing and printing information.
Digital printing machines can include either an automatic or a manually operated unit. Automatic units usually have a feeder mechanism that moves between two rollers. The roller mechanism then applies pressure on the paper as it is fed through the press. Manual digital printing machines can be operated with a push button, trigger or lever. These types of printing machines are frequently used by artists and other professional craftsmen because they are economical.
A digital printing machine makes use of several different production printing methods, depending on the application. The most common application of a digital printing machine is to reproduce images, whether the reproduction is to be used on paper, fabric or glass. Some other popular applications include offset printing, screen printing, bindery and finishing, and CNC printing.
Digital printing can be done in a variety of different ways. In inkjet printing, the printer uses water and ink in combination with ultraviolet radiation from the sun to produce the image. The resulting print is highly detailed and high quality. This is the most commonly used printing method for digital files such as photographs and text. There are drawbacks to using inkjet printing, however, as the ink runs out and has to be replaced, which could prove tedious and expensive.
High quality offset printing is done with a coated paper. The image is printed on thin pieces of aluminum foil. The foil is coated around and under each image so that when these are bonded together, the image is made larger than the actual surface of the foil. The images are offset, which means that each piece of paper is printed directly onto the stencil that is placed beneath it. This process allows the printer to produce extremely large prints. The only drawback to using offset printing is that it can be very expensive, especially if many copies of an advertisement are required.
In addition to using foil and aluminum, some printers may also use a hybrid technique known as digital printing process. With this type of printing machine, the image is produced directly onto a semi-transparent archival board or laminate. The archival board or laminate can be anything flat, smooth, and thick enough to allow the image to be easily seen when viewed on a computer monitor. Because the images are printed directly onto the board, there is no need to replace the ink used in the process, which cuts down on costs. The archival coating on the board also makes the print highly resistant to fading and smearing.
One final type of digital printing process is called heat transfer. This is typically only used in extremely large-scale print jobs. A heat transfer printer combines the functions of both an inlet and an offset printer. Instead of using an inkjet printer to generate the image, this type of printer uses an electronic circuit to transfer the image to directly onto paper or fabric. Heat transfer has the added advantage of being able to utilize the same paper or fabric for each piece of work (hence the name “heat transfer”). The most common use for a heat transfer machine is to print portraits and landscapes onto extremely large pieces of wood, but the technology is rapidly expanding and several companies are using heat transfer machines to print a wide range of text, including logos, on a variety of surfaces, including plastic and metal.
