There are several reasons why you lose your voice, but you can protect your voice with some simple tips. Here are some ideas on how to take of your voice so you don’t find yourself at a loss for saying words.

1. Drink Water

You should already have drinking water at the top of your list because there are so many other reasons to drink plenty of water. One of the best ways to maintain a healthy voice is to stay hydrated.

Dehydration can irritate your vocal cords and damage your voice—so keep a water bottle handy to drink throughout the day.

2. Warm Up Your Pipes

Before you have to give a speech, sing or teach, get your voice ready. You can do some shoulder and neck stretches. Then hum for a bit.

Start at the lower tones and move to higher tones with the different vowel sounds to warm up your vocal cords.

3. Avoid Further Strain

Be careful that you don’t yell or scream at games. Avoid trying to talk over loud noises because this puts unnecessary strain on your voice. If you want to yell, use the loud voice for a bit and then take it to a conversational volume.

Talking with a mask on can create challenges and you may try to talk louder than normal. Try moving to quieter areas or writing down messages to avoid vocal strain. Also, try to limit your loud voice which you may have to use more when wearing a mask.

4. Take a Break

Sometimes, you don’t have a choice but to talk all day, but try taking a break as much as you can—even if it is for ten minutes. Schedule a voice rest time if possible to keep your voice preserved.

If you are hoarse from the flu, a cold, or laryngitis, it’s vital that you take it easy. Try to avoid speaking loudly for a long period of time.

If your voice feels overworked, why not have someone else do the job. There are plenty of voice talents out there if you are looking for voice work such as recording a demo, presentation, or ad.

5. Listen to Yourself

It’s important that you listen to your body and your voice! Getting hoarse may be as simple as allergies or cold, or it could be something serious. If your voice is hoarse for more than a few weeks and you don’t have any cold symptoms, you should talk to your doctor about your vocal health.
