Accessories
Before we dive into the long and short of wedding outfits, it’s good to run over those smaller additions that can really accentuate your look. A great piece of jewelry can really make a lady’s outfit pop. Silver or gold earrings are a timeless touch, or a stylish necklace to compliment the neckline. Men, too, can benefit from a colorful pocket square or a fashionable belt buckle.
Dress codes
What guests should wear to a wedding is entirely dependent on the dress code the bride and groom have stipulated on the wedding invitation. With that in mind, here’s a rundown of the most common dress codes and what kind of attire is appropriate.
Black Tie
This is a particularly formal dress code and usually indicates that the wedding will be an evening event. For women, a floor-length gown is recommended. For men, a tuxedo, black bow tie, black vest and leather shoes are appropriate.
Formal
A formal dress code is slightly less strict than black tie, but still calls for more elegance than a casual outfit. For women, a cocktail or floor-length dress is perfect. (The main difference being the ability to show the ankles, which is not standard for black-tie). Men can wear a dark suit with a tie and polished shoes. Though a tuxedo would still be appropriate.
Cocktail
If the dress code is cocktail, it’s safe to go a little bit more casual, but not too casual. This is supposed to be a sort of sweet spot between comfortable and elegant. Men are still required to don a suit and tie. Women, however, can wear a knee-length, tea-length or midi dress.
Semi-Formal
For this category of dress code, the time of day is paramount. Darker colors for evening, lighter colors for daytime. From here women will want to wear a dress that falls below the knee, or an elegant skirt and top combo, or pantsuit. Wedges and formal flats are also a nice pairing. As for the men, a nice dress shirt and trousers, maybe with the addition of slacks. Tie optional.
Festive
most revealing swimsuits of all time, as it asks that guests get creative with their attire. The colors can be brighter and patterns more daring. For women, this might look like a ruffled skirt or something with sequins. And for men, think about a bolder sport coat or blazer.
Casual
Casual is just that: comfortable and easy. Though jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes and shorts are still out of the question. A sundress with wedges or stylish sandals is a good ensemble for women, while Khakis or other colorful dress pants along with a collared shirt is on the money for men
