This is a particularly formal dress code and usually indicates that the wedding will be an evening event. For women, a floor-length gown is recommended. For men, a tuxedo, black bow tie, black vest and leather shoes are appropriate.

If the dress code is cocktail, it’s safe to go a little bit more casual, but not too casual. This is supposed to be a sort of sweet spot between comfortable and elegant. Men are still required to don a suit and tie. Women, however, can wear a knee-length, tea-length or midi dress.
For this category of dress code, the time of day is paramount. Darker colors for evening, lighter colors for daytime. From here women will want to wear a dress that falls below the knee, or an elegant skirt and top combo, or pantsuit. Wedges and formal flats are also a nice pairing.
