The global Pandemic upended many traditional norms in both personal and professional lives. These tides of change have come with their own unique set of challenges. Confinement, coping with change, blurring of the lines between personal and professional spaces, career uncertainty, health – the causes for stress have risen to alarming levels. And amidst this, people have to work and do the tasks allotted to them. There are many changes in the overall HR scenario with WFH, remote working, role expansion and other factors kicking in. Against this backdrop it becomes essential to address employee and business concerns, both. 

Now, more than ever before – HR, Business leaders and organizations will need to focus on engaging with employees to address their concerns, and setting the right tone for the way forward. Engaged employees are productive employees – they can help to drive the business forward. One of the most effective and prevalent ways to engage with employees is Gamification. Basically, Gamification is the process of using game-based elements such as scoring, rewards or competition in organizations to get people fully & actively engaged in work. 

Surveys revealed that 72% people say that gamification motivates them to work harder. If injecting a fun element into any work or any task gives the zest and the energy to people to deliver results, why not? Not only will help to boost performance and achieve organizational goals, but also build team spirit. Gamification, planned and implemented properly, can make a huge difference in building team spirit, motivating employees and benefitting the organization. 

Implementing Gamification will need a careful assessment of the factors that motivate employees, what their concerns are, and what drives them. It comes down to 1 single but absolutely essential skill – listening. 

Let us look at ways through which Gamification can drive employee engagement: 

Train Employees through Gamification: 

The actual game starts with company incorporation in India as you look to expand the scope by instilling a proper onboarding and solid training for employees. This is to ensure the organization’s success. The onboarding process will have much more traction if some game-based elements can be included into it. Gamification is a great way to treat new hires who are joining the organization. It can also be deployed to teach new skills to people who are already part of the organization – though it may be difficult to motivate them to undergo the training.

This resistance can be overcome by introducing gamification. Leaderboards, missions, badges etc…can be introduced to drive engagement with the training – the interest levels will increase. And with interest, comes involvement. This will help build a learning culture in the organization that pushes business and drive the training agenda forward. 

Enhance Performance through gamification: 

Besides training, Gamification can also be used for improving employee’s job performance. Imagine how organizational success can be impacted if every employee’s performance improves! The best example of game-based learning for enhancing performance of employees is that of Salesforce. To increase usage of its complex CRM system by sales representatives and increasing employee engagement, they introduced a “Big Game Hunter” program. Sales reps started off as chicken hunters and as they used the CRM more, they were awarded more rewarding statuses. The CRM turned almost into a video game! Employee engagement shot up and the results were amazing!

Boost Communication through Gamification: 

One of the major factors for disengagement amongst employees cite is the lack of regular feedback and communication with their managers. The HR management in pandemic is all about listening to employee concerns, their problems and addressing these through gamification to help engage employees. Target leverage gamification for their cashiers by introducing game-based elements into their work. With this system, the cashiers got real time feedback with red & green lights that showed how efficiently items were scanned. Introducing gamification helped these cashiers learn how items were being scanned and how effective they were.  

Conclusion

As employee concerns and business goals come to the fore, organizations will need to address both, because they are inter-dependent. Boosting employee engagement with company monitoring software will mean that the employees are in tune with the organization’s goal and doing their best to deliver. This will make a huge difference in the way the business goals are addressed. If gamification can help to impact business goals positively, it should be leveraged to drive employee engagement. Agile organizations should experiment with Gamification to boost the performance levels.
