AVOID COMMON MISTAKES THAT CAN RUIN YOUR PLUMBINGApril 22, 2021
It is not that difficult to learn do-it-yourself plumbing skills with a little practice. If you are careful and dedicated, you can save a lot of money on repair bills by taking care of small problems on your own. But be forewarned, just having a pair of channel locks pliers doesn’t make you an expert plumber. Make sure you don’t make some of these common mistakes which can harm your system:
Leave the water on during repairs: If there is a cardinal rule to follow when repairing plumbing, it is to turn off the water before beginning. Turn off the main shut-off valve where water enters your home or turn off any faucets located near sinks and toilets. Failure to shut off the water supply can lead to a huge mess as water gushes out at full pressure from any hose you just loosened.
Being Careless with the Welding Torch : Welding pipes together is not necessarily hard work, but it can be dangerous. When bursting the torch, be sure to protect all flammable areas near your workspace, and never leave the torch unattended when the flame is lit.
Flush Garbage in the Toilet: It can be tempting to use the toilet as a trash can, but you should never flush anything other than toilet paper and human waste. Sending trash or other bathroom products down the sewer can clog your pipes quickly and cause the toilet to overflow into an unpleasant and dangerous mess.
Putting Grease in the Sink Drain: Cleaning grease off bacon can be boring, and it seems easy enough to just wash it in the sink. Bad idea. This grease and grease can clog your drain enough to force you to call a plumber. Plumbing works best when it’s properly maintained – not abused with grease.
Leave pipes exposed in winter: When temperatures drop below freezing, the pipes in your home should be protected by your heating system . But any plumbing that passes through unheated parts of your home or is exposed to the • outdoors is susceptible to freezing, and possibly bursting. Be sure to drain your irrigation system and insulate any pipes that could be at risk before you experience a freezing flood.
Refuse to ask for help: Sometimes all it takes is knowing when to surrender and calling a plumber 75006 . Plumbing work can be difficult, and even work that should be simple can produce serious complications.

5 Step Strainer Installation Guide
As the name suggests, a sink strainer is useful for filtering out foreign material such as hair, debris, and food scraps. It’s often overlooked, but it’s actually very useful in preventing the sink drain from clogging. To install a sink strainer, you need to follow the five easy steps below. You will also need paper towels or rags, plumber’s putty or silicone, sink cleaning solution, needle-nose pliers, and channel locks pliers.
Step 1 – Clean the bowl and sink hole by spraying a cleaning solution and wipe the bowl dry with rags or paper towels. This step is necessary to get rid of old cracked plumber’s putty or other residue that could prevent the new sink strainer rim from sitting properly.
Step # 2 – Apply a handful of plumber’s putty or a bead of silicone in a ring the size of the edge of the sink hole. Carefully fit the ring into the rim of the sink hole and secure the two parts by applying light pressure. Wipe off excess putty or caulk with your finger.
Step # 3 – Put the strainer wire basket into the hole and press the edges to seal it with silicone or plumber’s putty. There may be excess silicone or sealant between the hole and the stem of the strainer basket. You can remove it with your finger, a rag or a putty knife.
Step # 4 – Install the rubber gasket supplied with the strainer. Place the gasket under the strainer basket rod until the gasket is properly seated in the bottom of the sink. Insert the cardboard gasket and locking nut. Hand tighten the nut on the underside.
Step # 5 – Have someone else hold the colander basket firmly in place with needle nose pliers. Meanwhile, using the needle nose pliers, tighten the jam nut under the sink.
Here is a simple and step-by-step guide to installing sink filters. Remember, you must allow time for the plumber’s putty or silicone to dry completely before you can use the sink again. While waiting for the putty or caulk to set, do not turn on the faucet as the water can wash everything away.
When you finish installing the strainer, you need to check for leaks. Fill the sink bowl with water and check for any leaks or weeping under the bowl. Place a bucket under the sink if you don’t want the floor to get wet.
